Background and Inspiration

Q: What initially sparked your interest in product design?

A: I started in licensed sports apparel and eventually moved into publishing of a quarterly magazine. I’ve always enjoyed seeing people use and experience my design work and tend to gravitate toward tangible products rather than the digital.

Design Process

Q: How do you approach balancing aesthetics with functionality in your designs?

A: It’s always a battle. The designer in me wants to be minimalistic and clean, but the fast-paced world we’re in dictates just the opposite. I strive to make the biggest impact with the smallest amount of resources.

It's a balancing act—simpler designs are cost-effective but may lack intrigue, whereas more daring concepts require greater effort and cost. There's no perfect solution; it's a constant chess game of balancing production costs with aesthetic appeal.

Industry Insights

Q: What trends do you see shaping the future of product design?

A: I see some really cool innovation with products that allow them to be more versatile and user friendly. The flip side of that is that I’m also seeing products become lower quality and more expendable. Some consumers are starting to realize that it’s worth it to spend a little bit more money and get something that will last twice as long.

Advice and Reflection

Q: What advice would you give to aspiring product designers?

A: I would say to stick to it. Don’t look for the instant fame or gratification. Those things aren’t real and they aren’t sustainable. Stick to your guns and do nice work and it will eventually pay off. It’s a long road though and it’s never easy, but it’s worth the effort.
